SADD Group Conducts Red Ribbon Week Activities
Awareness is the goal
Heartland High School's newly formed chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) conducted Red Ribbon Week activities during the week of October 24-28 to promote awareness about the dangers of using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Staff and students in the elementary and high school were given red ribbons or stickers to wear in support of a drug-free lifestyle. Statistics about under-age drinking or drug use were read daily in the announcements also.
Another activity they organized was a poster contest for the elementary students. Each class was invited to create a poster in support of Red Ribbon Week. SADD members then judged the posters and decided that Mrs. Sisty's 2nd grade class had the most original and creative poster. All classes that participated received Smarties candy, because "Smarties don't use drugs and alcohol." The winning class received Smarties and Red Ribbon Week pencils.
Everyone Wear Red day was Thursday and all staff and students were encouraged to wear red to show support for Red Ribbon Week. Anyone wearing red was invited to come trick-or-treating at Mrs. Koehler's office on that day. Students were also encouraged to sign a large poster in the lunch room indicating their pledge to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free.
