Mural Artist Visits Heartland
Mary Lou Goertzen, the artist who created the mural, “The Community Educates its Children” in the Heartland school lobby, returned last week to refresh the work she created more than 50 years ago. Mary Lou and her husband, Ernest, both taught in the Henderson Community School from 1953-1956. Mary Lou is a professional artist living in Deadwood, Oregon.
Mrs. Goertzen, who was accompanied by her daughter Anya, spent the week touching up and refreshing the mural. Several teachers brought students from their classes to listen to her explain its symbols.. Learning more about the mural's background and the artist who created it gave students a new appreciation for the art they see every day.
