Heartland’s Quiz Bowl was on the road several times this fall. After the Literature Bowl in September, three young ladies attended the Young Women’s Quiz Bowl in Seward, NE on October 19th. Leslie Braun, Ellie Steingard, and Brooke Weisheit represented Heartland with 2 wins and 1 loss in the pool play rounds in the morning, but were defeated by Thayer Central in the first round in the afternoon.
The next week in October, two teams competed in Concordia University’s History and Geography Bowl on Concordia’s campus in Seward. Ethan Hall (Captain), Kyle Ott, and Aaron Buller made up one of Heartlands’ teams and Brooke Weisheit (Captain), Isabelle Vanderneck, and Noah Hiebner made up the second team. Both teams won 2 and lost 2 matches that day.
The Math Club has also gone on the road this fall. Two students attended the UNO Math Day on October 28th held on UNO’s campus. Noah Hiebner and Mark Perez, pictured at left, worked together to complete the Data Analysis questions during the event. Starting at 9 AM in Omaha, the students had 45 minutes to individually work through a set of 20 multiple choice questions. Then students each worked through a set of 10 target questions. The students were given the target questions in pairs and were allotted 10 minutes to work through both problems. The afternoon was a team contest, which could include up to 5 students. Noah and Mark represented Heartland well although a few more minds may have alleviated the stress of the time constraint. Overall, the day was a success and the specialty buffalo chicken and macaroni pizza prepared by UNO students was delicious!
Our last event for the fall was the UNL Math Day. All eight students who attended took the Probe 1 test right away in the morning and the top three scorers for Heartland were Lane Huebert, Noah Hiebner, and Ellie Steingard. The quiz bowl round was limited to six students with only three competing at a time. It was a great experience for our first time attending the event since 2006 and the students are looking forward to attending again next year.
