Heartland FFA Competes at District Land Judging

Cole Blomendahl

The Heartland FFA Chapter recently traveled to McCool Junction to compete in land judging.  The event was coordinated by Scott Snell and the Upper Big Blue NRD from York.  144 students, making up 39 teams, participated in the event.

In land judging, a student must determine the depth of a soil’s topsoil and subsoil.  They must also calculate erosion, slope, permeability and surface texture of the soil.  After deciding the soil’s characteristics, a student must determine the land capability class of the soil and select recommended land treatments for that particular soil.  This is done to four different sections of land.

Leading the way and receiving blue ribbons for the Heartland FFA Chapter were Rick Siebert, Cody Brown and Darrell Traudt.  Members receiving reds were Aundrea Jorgenson and Brian Barr.  White ribbons went to Casey Goertzen and Brielle van den Berg.  Heartland also received two white team ribbons for their efforts.

Also participating for Heartland was: Connor Hiebner, Jon Dean, Kirk Smith, Andrew Spader, Alex Ruybalid, Brandon Friesen, Miranda Janzen, Al Fhuere, Seth Schaldecker, Justin Wessels, Cort Regier, Michael Brune, Carlie Weisheit, Luis Romo, Brenan Erb and Morgan Tracy.
