Nissen Competes Well at State Golf Meet
NSAA Class C State Golf covered 36 holes of
competitive golf at Meadowlark Hills in Kearney on May 27 and 28.
Jesse Nissen, Heartland’s first boys, state qualifier, took to the
links against 96 other golfers from across the state. This
sophomore’s opening hole gave him a birdie and he was off. He sunk
several putts of 30 feet and better to make par during the tourney.
His first day ended with an 82. He had shot a 42 on the front nine
and then came back with a 40 on the back. This had had him sitting
at 23 after the first day. On Thursday, he shot a 41 on the first
nine then returned with a 39 ending his state golf experience with
another birdie. Jesse ended shot a 162 leaving him at 21 out of a
field of 96. The winner for the day was Richard Schneider of West
Point-Beemer who shot 143. The cutoff for the 15th place medal was
159. The two days were filled with new experiences for Nissen.
There were media people with huge cameras snapping pictures as he
teed off. Crowds of people were following golfers who are used to
golfing with only their foursomes or sometimes a person or two
trailing them. Rules officials were available for explanations or
decisions. Pin placement sheets were used and officials pushed to
keep the groups moving quickly. The course had spotters to find the
ball that flew over trees and landed in the rough. Coach Adams
said, “Jesse Nissen kept his composure and played hard, studying
his notes and preparing for every hole. Jesse made some incredible
shots. Nissen, a sophomore, will be back working for a medal next
year.”
