Pennies for Patients
Pennies for Patients
Raises Over $500
When students at Heartland decide to help they go all out. Three weeks ago, Heartland Sophomore Michelle Barr, high school guidance counselor Linda Koehler, and the Heartland Chapter of the FBLA took on the challenge of raising money for cancer research. This project was special to Michelle because she recently lost an aunt to cancer. They joined The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Pennies for Patients” campaign and went to work raising money among fellow students. Passing ice cream buckets at games, putting cans out in classrooms and at the middle school conducting and event called “Stuck for a Buck.”
Mr. Carr, 6th grade teacher, volunteered to be stuck to a wall by students who had received one piece of duct tape for each dollar they contributed in donations. The tape was then used to fasten Mr. Carr to the wall of the gymnasium, eventually suspending him entirely off of the floor. As he was being taped to the wall, the puns started to fly. Heartland 8th grader Tyler Kliewer asked, “How ya holding up, Mr. Carr?”
The culminating event took place on Monday morning, February 26 at the gym in Bradshaw and was enjoyed by all. The “icing” on the event was the highest donor from each class grades 5-8 getting to splat a pie in Mr. Carr’s face. Michelle and Mrs. Koehler indicated they were “overwhelmed” by the generosity of the middle school students and Mr. Carr’s willingness to be taped to a wall for charity.
A big thank you goes out to all the donors and Henderson State Bank for counting all the coins. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Carr for his endurance, good nature and sportsmanship. “Thanks Mr. Carr, we loved it.”
