Second Grade Studies Insects

Wearing Bug Glasses!

What has three main body parts, six legs, compound eyes, antennae and wings?  An insect of course!  The second grade students have been face-to-face with many insects during the month of September.  They have observed the life cycle changes of a painted lady butterfly, watched an ant colony build an underground home, and witnessed a praying mantis lay her eggs right before their eyes!

Mrs. Sisty's Class

A mealworm was also kept in each student's desk to observe the metamorphosis of the darkling beetle.  They were excited to look in their container each day to see if their mealworm changed into a pupa, and finally into a darkling beetle.

Take a look at the slideshow to see the life cycle changes of the darkling beetle.slide show  Mealworm Life Cycle

Nice going second grade! I have been watching you learn about insects and especially the Painted Lady Butterfly. How exciting and what a beautiful insect.
