"Big Foot Was Here" - Metric Olympics

By Sherryl Friesen

The fifth graders have been measuring by mm, cm, and km and weighing with grams.  As a culminating activity, they participated in a Mini-Metric Olympics.  The events they competed in were the paper plate discus, Big Foot contest, left-handed sponge squeeze, right-handed marble grab, cotton ball shot put and the straw javelin.  The students with the closest prediction to their actual measurement were the winners of a gold, silver, or bronze metal.
