Students Experience Something New

At lunch today, we offered students the chance to try a smoothie made from fresh strawberries, bananas, yogurt, and fruit juices.  There were many that were quite excited about the chance and others that were a little more reluctant.  During the course of the year, we will offer foods to sample that are different from what they would normally expect.  Our hope is that they will explore new foods and expand their diet to include fresh and healthy ingredients.

Examples of what we will try during the year may include pumpkin seeds, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, or greens from our grow towers in the cafeteria.  We would also like to explore foods from different cultures.  It is free for the students to try a sample of these new offerings.  If they would like a larger serving, we will offer those for $1.00.

If your child loved the smoothie, we are sharing the recipe below:

Strawberry/Banana Smoothies

8 Servings

  • 4 bananas
  • 4 cups strawberries
  • 2 cups plain or vanilla yogurt
  • A heavy tbs. of orange juice
  • A heavy tbs. of milk
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 2 tbs. of sugar
  • Optional: handful of ice

Blend until smooth.  Other fruits, such as blueberries may be substituted, as well.
