Heartland’s Quiz Bowl started off their first-ever meet at the Young Women’s Quiz Bowl in Seward, NE. Team Captain, Haley Huebert, led her teammates McKenna Friesen, Brooke Weisheit, and Isabelle Vanderneck with three wins in the morning round robin tournament against Friend B, Osceola, and Dorchester. But one loss to Friend A gave Heartland the 3rd seed for the afternoon. With a win again against Dorchester and a loss to Humphrey, Heartland faced Friend A again for the 3rd place spot. It was a close match to the finish. Friend A took the lead at 80 to 60 with only 5 minutes remaining. Each toss-up question is worth 10 points and is answered individually. If a toss-up question is answered correctly, then the team gets the chance to answer a bonus question worth 5 points. Before the 20 minutes expired, Heartland was 90-90 with Friend A. The next toss-up question answered correctly would win the match. Heartland took the match after the third toss-up question. Congratulations Haley, McKenna, Brooke, and Isabelle for earning that 3rd place spot! The next Quiz Bowl event will be in the Spring.
