The school calendar for the 2013-14 school year has been approved. Next year's calendar will look and work somewhat different than in year's past. This article will try to explain the changes that were adopted and provide you with a link to download the calendar and also to access an interactive calendar with the new changes identified and explained.
The primary differences in next year's calendar are:
Teacher professional development days are now full days. Aside from the very first student day, "Early Dismissals" and "Late Starts" have been eliminated. We are hopeful that these full days of professional development are more productive for our staff in regard to school improvement efforts. We also hope that full days off from school for students will make it easier for daycare arrangements rather than trying to find someone to watch the children for a couple hours in the morning or afternoon on the partial school days. These full days of teacher training will also allow more flexibility for parents to utilize 4-day weekends as many of them are paired with "days off" on the Friday prior.
The last day of school will move later depending on the number of snow days. This year, while an exception to most, we had to use 5 weather related days off from school. This resulted in 175 student contact days with teachers and a loss of nearly 35 hours of instruction. With the new schedule, we are scheduling 174 student contact days, but they are full days and any loss due to weather will be added to the end of the year. When compared to this year, the new calendar would have provided 16 more hours or nearly 2.5 days or additional instruction and 19 more hours of professional development for our teachers.
With the new calendar, the "earliest last day" for students will be May 16th. If we have a weather cancellation, their last day would move to May 19th; two cancellations would move the last day to the 20th, etc. We will make every effort to end the school year prior to Memorial Day, but on a wintry year, other days in the schedule may need to be recaptured in order to for that to happen.
Parent-teacher conferences are reflected on the calendar, but may need to be moved due to a school activity conflict at a later time.
We are hopeful that the new calendar will enable us to move forward with school improvement initiatives at a faster pace while not sacrificing instructional time for our students. With full days of school and professional development, we are confident that our time will be even more productive.
