Participating at Board Meetings

Public participation at board meetings can be an important part of the process.  Public comment at the board meeting is encouraged, but under the guidelines established by the board.  

Public comment may be suspended by the board president and is not guaranteed at every meeting or on every topic.  The board president has the discretion to limit the time for each patron's comments.

The school board does have policies in place that allow for public participation or input, but there are steps of which patrons need to be aware.  You may download a copy of the policy by clicking on the following link: Public Comment in Board Meetings

Individuals who have complaints about employees or students shall follow policies 403.05 and 504.01 respectively.  The board shall follow policy 1005.01 in handling public complaints.

Any questions on these guidelines may be directed to the superintendent of schools.

General Guidelines:

It is helpful if patrons wish to address the board that they notify the superintendent by noon on the day of the meeting.

To address the board about an item on a current agenda:

  • Please make your desire to speak known to the board president prior to the start of the meeting.
  • Time to address the board on these items will be announced early in the agenda.  
  • The board will delay discussion on the matter until the time at which it is scheduled to be discussed on the agenda.

To address the board about an item not on the agenda:

  • Anyone who wishes to address the board on any topic not on the meeting agenda should make a request to the superintendent by noon on the meeting date.
  • Please make your desire to speak known to the board president prior to the start of the meeting.
  • Comments on items not on the agenda may not be discussed by board members.  
  • Questions or an exchange of ideas between the board and the audience for items not on the agenda is not permitted under the open meetings law.

To request the addition of an agenda item: 

  • Persons requesting to place an item on the agenda must make a request to the superintendent prior to the drafting of the tentative agenda.
  • Requests to add an agenda item should be made one week prior to the meeting.
  • The person making the request must state the person’s name, purpose of the presentation, action desired and pertinent background information.
  • Adding such requests will be at the discretion of the superintendent after consultation with the board president.
