Heartland Celebrates Teen Read Week

During the week of October 15-19, students at Heartland Community Schools junior and senior high school celebrated Teen Read Week and were encouraged to read because it’s fun. Focusing on the theme LOL @ Your Library –or Laugh Out Loud @ Your Library--teens were encouraged to continue using the library and to check out books to read for pleasure.

Ellen Simon, a local writer who enjoys writing humorous poetry, shared some of her writing with a few of the high school English classes. Others listened to English teacher Dave Ehly read cowboy poetry by Baxter Black. Students participated by making posters or by sharing humorous book passages with their classmates.

Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative aimed at teens, their parents, librarians and educators.  It is celebrated each year during the third week of October.  Since 1998, Teen Read Week™ has encouraged teens to:

  • Make time to read for the fun of it
  • Use their library to discover their interests
  • Get reading materials and participate in events at their school or public library

The local event was coordinated by Mrs. Joan Friesen, library media specialist at Heartland Community Schools. English teachers Sharon Bishop, Dave Ehly, Julie Goertzen, and Susan Watt provided class time for this project.
